Direct link with the fish, the line used plays a very important role in the success of your fishing, whether you are stalking the predators with lures or with natural baits. Nylons, braids, fluorocarbons, steels, all these filaments will be used to get the best from each technique. Once very dominant, the nylon is still used today for live bait fishing. But it is also used by some lure anglers who use it for example to optimize the swim of crankbaits, limit the vibrations felt in the rod, the vibrations emitted in the water and limit hook pulls. The braid now occupies a very important place in the equipment of all predator anglers, especially for lure fishing. It has the advantage of being much more resistant to traction at equal diameter, it allows you to fish finer, cast further and its lack of memory gives you a much better feel of the bottom and bites. These many advantages have led many lure anglers to only use this filament as the main line. The braid is in our opinion almost indispensable for all fishing requiring sensitivity (soft lures in the first place), a very strong linear resistance for strong fishing of pike, catfish, or a total lack of memory for strong hook sets when using Texas rigs or frogs. Two main families of braids are distinguished, the 4 strand braids, often cheaper, they offer better abrasion resistance but are often noisier and therefore less discreet. The 8 strand braids (or more) often have the advantage of being rounder, they have better linear resistance at equivalent diameter, slide better in the rings allow to fish finer but are also more flexible (beware of birds nests for beginners). A fluorocarbon tip is almost indispensable when you fish in braid, it will protect the end of your line against abrasion (fish teeth, obstacles etc.). Its refraction index close to that of water will also offer great discretion, it will however be less flexible than nylon. Some anglers also use it as the main line, taking advantage of its lower elasticity compared to nylon (gain in sensitivity) and its good abrasion resistance, its stiffness makes it more difficult to cast. Finally, the steel will allow you to make leaders for live bait fishing or pike fishing with lures too small to support a large diameter fluorocarbon.
