The wormy squirmy is a fly pattern that originates from the United States and is based on a relatively new material made of an incredibly stretchy rubbery substance. The material is thick, heavy, available in a wide range of colors and wiggles in an extremely enticing way. You will struggle to find a worm imitation anywhere as realistic or effective as the squirmy. Some people think about it, but it's really just an obese bloodworm imitation.

On a good day, it's a really effective model to try. The Squirmy worm was originally used on US rivers for brown trout and rainbow trout. It's just as deadly here, and it's an extremely effective model for the grayling on rivers, especially in pink and red, if the water is clear or colored. It's great for big perch and roach too. Cast it upstream and retrieve the line while the worm comes back to you in the current and you'll probably connect sooner or later. In rivers, I find it works better with a bead to help the material sink a bit better, which also seems to slightly improve the action.
