CHARACTERISTICS Waterproofness: The more waterproof the fabric, the better. Your rain gear is selected based on several criteria: the type of rain and length of exposure will help you determine the level of waterproofing for your rain gear. A jacket considered waterproof at 5000 mm of water should keep you dry under 100 L/h/m² rain for more than 2 hours. The qualitative nature of rainfall is difficult to assess. Météo-France states that for our country, heavy rain corresponds to a precipitation rate of 8 L/h/m², far from these records! (Source: Météo-France)
Breathable The human body produces about 0.06 litre of water per hour at rest, and the more effort, the more water is released. Breathability is a fabric's ability to evacuate the water vapour created by the body during exertion. A fabric guaranteeing good breathability limits the condensation of water vapour inside the garment and keeps the body dry, whether at rest or during intense exertion.
Water Resistance It is not enough that the component your jacket is made from is waterproof to keep you dry; any holes required for the assembly of your jacket need to be sealed to assure a perfect water-resistance. Certain mechanisms, like velcros, elastics and cuffs placed at the extremities can also limit water seepage. You will find an example of this on our sealed items with the carteline.
Water Repellency The water repellency of a material is not to be confused with its water resistance: water repellency is a fabric's ability to let water roll off its surface, without absorbing it. Water repellency is not an intrinsic quality of the fabric but results from a hydrophobic treatment applied to the external face of the fabric; normal use, as well as detergents and other impurities require a reactivation of the water repellent treatment, or a renewal of the treatment.
Windproof The sensation of cold increases significantly with wind. The coating and membrane applied on the backside of the fabric of your jacket serves as a barrier against wind, thus allowing you to limit loss of heat.
Semi-Waterproof In stormy weather, it is the upper part of your jacket that is particularly exposed. That's why, for added comfort and technicality, the main seams of your clothing are waterproof.
