Le thon rouge est un gros poisson migrateur de la famille des maquereaux (Scombridae). On le retrouve dans les eaux de l'océan Atlantique occidental et oriental, ainsi que de la mer Méditerranée. L’espèce peut atteindre plus de 900 kg et environ 4 mètres de long. Il se caractérise par sa forme fusiforme et idéalement aérodynamique, ainsi que par un système de thermorégulation le plus avancé de tous les poissons osseux. Comme ses cousins, le thon rouge est un excellent chasseur, se nourrissant principalement de petits poissons et de calmars. À l'échelle mondiale, le thon rouge est menacé d'extinction et est actuellement l'une des espèces de poissons les plus menacées.
