Les plies forment un groupe d'espèces de poissons plats de la famille des Pleuronectidés. Ce sont des poissons démersaux, ce qui leur confère leur forme de corps plat caractéristique et leur apparence unilatérale. La plie peut se cacher et se camoufler rapidement, grâce à sa capacité à changer de couleur et à s'enfouir dans le sable. Ce sont des prédateurs nocturnes, se nourrissant principalement de petits organismes marins. La plie est invariablement associée aux eaux de la mer du Nord et de la mer Baltique, où elle constitue une partie importante de la pêche commerciale et de la culture locale.
