Un membre proéminent et majestueux de l'environnement pélagique, le marlin bleu est l'un des plus gros poissons osseux et peut-être le plus reconnaissable des istiophoridés. Les femelles atteignent plus de 2000 livres tandis que les mâles sont beaucoup plus petits. Endémique de l'océan Atlantique, le makaire bleu est également présent dans les eaux tropicales et subtropicales du Pacifique et de l'océan Indien. Ils utilisent leur bec pour assommer leurs proies, se nourrissant principalement de poissons comme le thon, la bonite, le poisson volant, le ballyhoo et le calmar. C'est un poisson puissant et très recherché par les pêcheurs sportifs.
