Le Gardon est un petit membre de la famille des cyprinidés (communément connue comme la famille des carpes). Poussant à environ 30 cm, on le retrouve dans les lacs, les rivières, les étangs et les eaux saumâtres de l’Europe et l’Asie. L'espèce a un corps court argenté caractéristique avec des yeux rouges et des nageoires caudales rouges indéniables. Souvent trouvés dans les petits bancs, les gardons se nourrissent principalement de matériel végétal et de petits insectes, larves et gastéropodes. C'est une espèce très prudente et timide et une collation préférée des des poissons prédateurs.
