Starfish are marine invertebrates that have been on earth for 450 million years. They form a class of echinoderms (Asteroidae). There are between 1500-2000 species of starfish living in all oceans. They can have different colours and sizes and the number of arms radiating around their bodies can vary. Starfish can withstand extreme temperatures and pressures. They are benthic invertebrates (they live resting on the seabed) and feed on bivalves, algae and small organisms. They have a life expectancy of a few years (4 to 5), but some species can even live 30 years.
