The ostrich herl is a natural material whose micro-barbules hold air bubbles that reflect light.
Ostrich herls are in fact mini ostrich feathers. It's a natural material whose micro-barbules retain air bubbles that reflect light. Wrapped around the shank, it creates patterns of nymphs, dry and emerging ones aerated and realistic.
Ostrich herl also applies to the assembly of tails and sub-wings of streamers, like behind a marabou hackle of steelhead and trout flies. It can also be used to create soft and mobile wings of wet flies.
