The grey seal is a species of the Phocidae family, or "true seals". It is found abundantly along the coasts of the Atlantic Ocean and the Baltic Sea. The species prefers rocky coastlines but heads to deep water to feed on fish, mollusks and cephalopods. Grey seals live in small herds including a dominant male and several females. As their name suggests, their colouring consists of a grey or dark grey back, with a cream-coloured belly. Grey seals can slow their heartbeats during dives, in order to reduce oxygen use and extend their dives.
