Just like rods, landing nets can be a very personal choice. Aesthetics, function and price still influence most anglers' decisions when purchasing a new item of fishing gear.
We took inspiration from a classic design of the past. Available in the early 80s in a store in North London, Dons of Edmonton. Their Springbow was a brown fibreglass landing net, featuring a heavy, unique stainless steel spreader tube but that said, it was the landing net of the time and the only serious choice for the regular carp angler at that time!
The current fashion seems to be for very thin handles, similar or matching to the angler's rods.
We've gone completely against this trend. For performance, it was incredibly important that the arms and pole have strong rigidity. By having a very small diameter pole, you increase weight as you have to increase wall thickness and slim diameter handles are simply harder to hold. A larger diameter handle increases rigidity, is easier to use and more comfortable to hold. We can utilise a thinner wall section without having to compromise on strength or weight.
Our model has a 6' handle tapering from 23 to 18mm. Made of ultra-lightweight, high-performance carbon fibre, with a superb matte black finish. With a beautifully turned 316 stainless steel tip at the end. This allowed to create a net so light that once assembled and used, it lays perfectly on the surface of the water without need of a float.
One of the key points of the design was to create an "original" block. Something extremely lightweight, very robust and unique in appearance. From concept to production, we updated the design four times over a period of about two and a half years. The final version is stunning to look at. Designed by our friends at JAG, it is incredibly lightweight, but most importantly very easy to use and assemble. When you present the arms to the block, you will notice that it has a slight oval shape on the inside, we have machined the block to have what we call a leading edge. This creates extra room for the arm when it is flexed and pushed in place. The arms exit the block at the perfect 91-degree angle, which, with using the stiffest arms we could manufacture without compromising assembly, gives a really lovely shape. Each arm is fitted with a machined, oversized rounded anodized aluminum tip, designed not to pass through and damage the net. This part holds the thick green cord between the arms, with zero stretch and a perfect curve, keeping everything as taut as possible and helps to reduce drag when it is pushed into the water.
The aluminum block is machined on the front and back faces (you can see the arms inside). This feature further reduces the weight and gives the whole set a certain style. We added a small slot on the front face that can accommodate a 15mm isotope (NOT included) and etched the Spring Bow logo on the back. The final touch was to spray the block in a wear-resistant Gun Smoke ceramic finish.
The Spring Bow landing net is available in two versions: a version with significant depth or shallow in HewMesh mesh, and each version is available in widths of 42", 46" or 50".
The deep version will prevent any impromptu jumps from the fish once in the net. It has a depth of 53” / 135cm.
The less deep version is perfect for the angler who doesn’t need increased depth and who lays the fish on the mat in the boat or on the shore straight after netting it. The depth is 37” / 95cm.
All nets come in a very hard-wearing Korda Dark Kamo bag featuring separate pockets for the handle and arms.
Standard version, shallow for "normal" conditions, off jetties.
